DTG vs Screen Printing method – What you should choose?

If you are starting your new t-shirt store or want to scale it, you might have a question-Which printing method should I choose?

There are plenty of printing options available but the most popular ones are DTG and Screen Printing. Choosing the right one for your business is important to scale your business.

In this article, we have thrown light on the DTG and Screen printing method and which one is best for you.

Screen Printing

In the screen printing method, ink is pushed through a woven screen (also known as mesh stencil) on the fabric. The ink doesn’t soak the fabric, but sets on the top of the fabric.

What type of design is best for screen printing?

Screen printing is suitable for solid graphics with fewer details like basic typography, symbols, designs, and shapes. As screen printing uses stencils to transfer the inks it becomes difficult and time-consuming to make the different stencils.

As the colors are printing separately, screen printing is suitable for designs with the fewer

colors.

Is the screen printing fair for your business?

Screen printing is cost-effective and suitable for simple designs, but it requires some prior investment. Most third party print service providers ask for the minimum quantity that can be started from anywhere.

The final price of your screen printing bulk order is based on the number of colors and screens needed to print it. So it can be challenging for you financially.

For printing a good design some print service providers will ask you to print files layer by layer. They will ask you for color codes, so if you just want to “upload the designs and leave behind the rest” type of experience, this screen printing is not for you.

Direct to garment printing

DTG or Direct to Garment printing method relates to spraying of ink on the fabric. The ink soaks onto the fiber on the garment. DTG almost takes no time to set up which is a great advantage.

What type of design is best for DTG printing?

With DTG printers a lot of color options also come. This means you can print detailed designs with no limitation of colors.

The only problem with DTG printing is that the designs with less than 100% opacity don’t print well with the DTG printers. The DTG printer takes it as missing color causes a lot of gaps.

Is DTG printing fair for your business?

DTG printing is a moderate way to print on the garments for your customers.

Most third party printers have no requirement of the minimum order for the DTG products. So you do not have to worry about piling up the stock.

There is no requirement of extra set up for the different colors, so the entire design can be printed in one go.

If you are looking for the freedom to introduce a new design or enter the new market, DTG printing is for you.

Selecting the DTG or Screen printing method is completely your choice. But before making any decision consider points like the quantity you need, the complexity of the designs, budget, and available resources.

But if you are looking for an easier way to scale your business the DTG printing is the best option.
